Smart Metering
To deliver energy management in the future, it is essential first to measure energy consumption accurately and provide visibility to consumers of their energy consumption. With increasing energy costs, it is surprising that it is still considered acceptable to estimate consumption for billing purposes.
With the UK Government’s recent announcement that it will mandate smart meters and 47 million gas and electric meters to be rolled out between 2010 and 2020, Navetas are in a unique position to deliver smart metering in the UK. Navetas understand not only the technology required for smart metering, but also the commercial requirements that must be fulfilled for a smart meter deployment to be successful, particularly in the UK de-regulated market place. We consider that smart metering technology can be deployed to measure any utility commodity (e.g. electricity, gas, water, LPG) and that will not only will it remotely communicate accurate, timely and reliable consumption data for billing purposes it will also provide visibility and a consumer interface to inform users about their energy consumption and a means of managing their energy usage effectively.
Smart meters have the potential to offer benefits to energy users, energy suppliers and energy generators, but they need to be used effectively for these benefits to be fully realised.
