To deliver energy management into the future, it is essential first to measure energy consumption accurately and provide visibility to consumers of their energy consumption. With increasing energy costs, it is surprising that it is still considered acceptable to estimate consumption for billing purposes.

The Energy End-Use Efficiency and Energy Services Directive (ESD) is a European directive to be implemented by all European Member States that will require more timely and accurate billing by energy suppliers. Whilst the directive is not specific it is a clear indication of the growing momentum behind Smart Metering as part of the solution towards effective energy management. Many European countries, including Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, France, Italy and Spain, have launched large smart metering projects.
