Let's get on with it..
Monday 30th August 2010
The recently published DECC/Ofgem Smart
Metering Implementation Programme Prospectus provided some very interesting
holiday reading over the summer break.
In the Prospectus the Government stated
that in order to bring forward the start of the roll-out and help deliver the
early, the benefits of smart metering to 27 million homes in the UK, the
Government are proposing a staged approach to implementation under which
suppliers will start to install smart meters that meet the minimum requirements
defined in common technical specifications ahead of a central data and
communications entity being established.
Despite this stated vision there is no
detail in the Prospectus on how this acceleration will happen. Indeed as part
of the consultation (yes there is another one!) DECC/Ofgem ask interested
stakeholders to provide ideas on how the roll-out could be carried out more
quickly.
Regular readers of this blog will know
i have advocated strongly for the Government to just let the market get on with
installing smart meters. All of this indecision just helps to stall the
process.
It is time for DECC/Ofgem to set a
definitive timetable and just get on with it..
